Chapter 25

Enforcer Yang led Mia to another room, where Mia changed into a dark-blue prison jumpsuit and black rubber footwear that resembled Crocs. Mia folded her clothes and hat, zipped them into a clear plastic bag along with her trainers, and meekly handed the bag to Enforcer Yang.

“You might want to trim your hair,” Enforcer Yang said conversationally as Mia walked beside her in the direction the ‘cell block’ sign pointed to. “Trust me; many of the women here like nothing better than grabbing long hair.” Enforcer Yang turned to Mia, appraising her. “And you do have beautiful hair.”

Mia’s black hair had been straight and shoulder-length when she arrived in this Ingland nineteen days ago, but it had grown out a little and was now curly at the ends.

“How can I get a pair of scissors?” Mia asked, assuming she would have to do the trimming herself.

“The women have salon days once a week. You can book an appointment with the hairdresser to get a haircut.”

“But I don’t have access to credit to make payments.”

“The hairdresser is one of you, so getting your hair done is completely free.” Enforcer Yang smiled darkly. “Just make sure you’re not in her bad books or the bad books of anyone whom she might owe a favour. We generally keep anything that could be used as a weapon away, but the hairdresser is allowed sharp objects on salon days. Of course, she is closely monitored by an Enforcer at all times, but accidents do happen. A snip to your hair could easily become a slash to your face. You get my meaning?”

Mia’s blood ran cold. She had never been inside a prison in her life and had hoped to never see the inside of one. She had even skipped right past all the prison GP roles when she had searched online for jobs, despite their relatively higher salaries.

It hadn’t been hard to figure out that the higher the salary, the higher the risk.

Enforcer Yang concluded matter-of-factly. “It would be a pity to lose such a beautiful face.”

They ambled in silence until they finally arrived at a metal door. “This will be your home until your trial,” Enforcer Yang said as she paused before the door. “When your Counsel arrives, you will be able to meet with them in the confidential suite. Until then, you stay here.” Her eyes met Mia’s. “Take my advice and stay out of trouble.”

Enforcer Yang was about to place her thumb on the wallpad when Mia spoke up. “I do not have a Counsel. How can I get one?”

“You will meet with the Tribunal Prosecutor in the next few days. They will formally notify you of the charges against you and also give you notice of your trial date. You should let them know that you do not have a Counsel, so the Tribunal will arrange one for you. You do have the right to a fair trial and adequate representation.”

Despite all that Enforcer Yang just said, Mia’s mind snagged on the words: ‘the next few days.
